Brisbane newest psych rock outfit June have just released their debut EP ‘Hold Down” and it is nothing short of impressive.
June originally hail from The Sunshine Coast, where they played their fist gig with The Jensens, an impressive feat for a band who had previously been on the house party scene. June are known for their infectious riffs, busy bass lines and an added array of exciting instruments not usually seen in psych rock. They push the boundaries, and this EP is no different.
Opening track Rising Tide is a nod to early tracks of icons such as King Gizzard And The Lizard Wizard, Tame Impala and Pond. With lead singer Riley Robertson-Burrows vocals perched perfectly on the edge of the mix and bassist Brad Durrant dancing intricately around a heavy mix of guitars and drums, you can’t help but want to jump out of your seat and become a dancing head banging mess.
In the middle of the madness comes “Float In The Moment” a time to catch your breath and sink back into your chair. This tune features beautiful backup vocals from Claudia “Fiddle” Vogel, the bands violinist and keys player. A newer addition to the now six piece band, and a decision that has really pushed June to the next level. Second last on the track list is ‘Pressure’, a mix of heavy half time riffs and punchy vocals that leaves you with a familiar feeling of Tame Impalas ‘Half Full Glass Of Wine’, and gives you an exciting rush when the band finds their way back to main riff for one last hurrah.
